QB Mason Rudolph, Titans agree on one-year contract worth up to $3.62 million

After switching to rookie quarterback Will Levis last season, Tennessee Titans is adding another signal caller.

The team has agreed to sign former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph to a one-year deal worth up to $3.62 million, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Behind Levis, the Titans’ quarterback room now comprises Rudolph and Malik Willis, a third-year stop.

Rudolph, 28, spent six seasons with the Steelers after being selected by them in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He has a career total of 3,085 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 21 games. The former Oklahoma State Cowboy holds an 8-4-1 record in 13 starts. While Kenny Pickett was sidelined with an ankle sprain in the most recent campaign, Rudolph stepped up to help Pittsburgh make the playoffs. Now he will start a new chapter in Tennessee.

He will join the Titans during the first offseason of the organization’s new era. The team fired longtime coach Mike Vrabel and replaced him with former Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan after two consecutive seasons without a playoff berth.

Shortly after Rudolph’s addition, it was reported that the Titans signed wide receiver Calvin Ridley to a four-year, $92 million contract. Tennessee will also step down Tuesday from the franchise that runs Derrick Henry, who signed a two-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens.

Longtime quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who sits on the bench, is likely to be the next exit in 2023. The Steelers were reportedly interested in adding the 35-year-old as Pickett’s contender last month, but ended up signing Russell Wilson, a former Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks quarterback.

For the Titans, harmonizing between quarterbacks is a priority, Callahan told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine last month.

“You want someone who can play that position first and foremost,” Callahan said. “Another really important element of backup quarterbacks is the way they’re in the room with the starting pitcher. That’s important. The relationship can be very beneficial. It can be very detrimental not to be on the same page.”

Rudolph and Levi’s turned out to be the perfect fit.
