Yoon approves science minister’s appointment

Newly appointed Minister of Science and ICT Yoo Sang-im answers questions from committee members during a confirmation hearing at the National Assembly in Yeongdeungpo District, Seoul, Aug. 8. Yonhap

President Yoon Suk Yeol approved the appointment of a Seoul National University professor as new science minister Friday, his office said, even as the National Assembly refused to adopt a confirmation hearing report on the nominee.

Yoo Sang-im, a material engineering professor, was named the minister of science and ICT last month, but opposition lawmakers refused to adopt a confirmation 토토 hearing report, citing allegations of ethical lapses, including his registration of a bogus home address in the past to help his children get into better schools.

By law, a parliamentary confirmation hearing should be held for a minister nominee, but the president can go ahead and appoint the nominee regardless of the results of the hearing.

The new minister is a brother of Rep. Yoo Sang-bum of the ruling People Power Party
