Gmarket posts highest spending per customer among online malls

Gmarket, an online shopping platform operated by Shinsegae Group, stood as the shopping mall with the highest expenditures per customer in the second quarter, industry data showed Sunday.
The monthly average expenditures per Gmarket customer came to 167,202 won ($121.60) over the April-June period, according to data 추천 compiled by industry tracker Wiseapp. The figure was calculated by dividing the total estimated payments for each platform by the number of active users.
Tmon followed with 163,754 won, and Coupang posted 141,867 won, the data also showed.
Chinese online platforms, which have been rolling out aggressive marketing campaigns, however, lagged far behind Korean players.
Alibaba Group’s AliExpress saw its average user spend 34,547 won over the April-June period, while PDD Holdings’ Temu posted 7,110 won.
“Low estimated expenditures per customer suggests a higher proportion of users are merely visiting the platform rather than intending to make a purchase,” an industry watcher said, adding that many local shoppers are visiting Chinese platforms out of curiosity.
